Breast Augmentation

Enhance Your Feminine Figure with Breast Augmentation

The most frequently performed cosmetic surgery procedure in the United States and on Long Island; breast augmentation can give women with small or unevenly sized breasts a fuller, firmer, better-proportioned look through the placement of implants in the breast. Women may elect to undergo breast augmentation for many different medical and aesthetic motivations, including balancing breast size and compensating for reduced breast mass after pregnancy or surgery. The procedure may be combined with others such as a breast lift for more satisfying results. Implants are silicone shells filled with saline (salt water) and are placed behind each breast, underneath either breast tissue or the chest wall muscle. The procedure lasts one to two hours and is typically performed with general anesthesia, although local anesthesia combined with a sedative is also possible. After surgery the patient’s bustline may be increased by one or more cup sizes.

Breast size is of importance to many women for a variety of reasons. Women who are not satisfied with their breast size may want to consider breast augmentation surgery.

Breast augmentation can increase fullness and projection of a woman’s breasts. Breast augmentation can improve the balance of a woman’s figure. A woman’s self image and self confidence can get a great boost as a result of breast augmentation.

Breast augmentation, also known as augmentation mammaplasty, involves the use of breast implants to fulfill an individual’s desire for fuller breasts. Breast augmentation may also be an option for women who wish to restore breast volume lost after weight reduction or pregnancy. Breast implants also may be used to reconstruct a breast after mastectomy or injury.

Breast augmentation does not correct severely drooping breasts. For sagging breasts, a breast lift should be done in conjunction with breast augmentation. Dr. Schwartz will assist you in making this decision.

Breast size and shape are important. It is necessary to be honest with your cosmetic plastic surgeon when discussing your expectations. The type of breast implant and the size should be based on the patient’s breast anatomy, skin elasticity and body type.

Options for Breast Implants
1.Saline Breast Implants

Saline breast implants are filled with sterile salt water. Saline breast implants can be filled with varied amounts of saline. The amount of saline affects the shape, firmness and feel of the breast. In the event that a saline breast implant leaks, the implant will collapse and the saline will be absorbed and naturally expelled from the body. Saline breast implants are FDA approved for breast augmentation in women 18 years and older.

Silicone breast implants are filled with an elastic gel. The gel is designed to look, feel and move much like natural breast tissue. If the implant leaks, the gel may remain within the implant shell or it may escape into the breast implant pocket. Dr. Schwartz recommends that silicone breast implants be checked regularly. Silicone breast implants are FDA approved for breast augmentation in women 22 years of age and older.

There are 3 common incision sites for breast implants. Breast implants can either be inserted through periareolar (around the nipple), inframammary (within the breast fold) or axillary (under the arm). Umbilical incision through the belly button is also an option.

What is a breast implant? A breast implant refers to a silicone shell that is filled with either silicone gel or saline. Breast implants are inserted under the breast tissue or under the chest muscle to create a fuller looking and feeling bustline.

What is silicone? Silicone is a substance derived from silicon, a semi-metallic element that in nature combines with oxygen to form silica. Examples of silica are beach sand, crystals and quartz.

Are silicone breast implants safe? The FDA has approved silicone breast implants in women 22 years of age and older.

Do breast implants increase the chances of breast cancer? Patients with breast implants have not been found to be at a greater risk than those without breast implants.

Will my breasts still move like normal breasts? While the goal is to create soft and natural moving breasts, results depend on breast anatomy, skin elasticity and body type.

Will breast implants cause me to lose nipple sensation? There can be an increase or decrease in nipple sensation after breast implant surgery. These effects can temporary or permanent.

What will happen to my breast implants during pregnancy? Patients who get breast implants prior to pregnancy, will experience different results. Women’s breasts will grow and go through the normal changes associated with pregnancy, and the amount of enlargement will vary depending on the individual.

Will I be able to breastfeed with breast implants? Many women with breast implants successfully breastfeed their babies. It is more common for breastfeeding issues to arise when the breast implants are inserted through periareolar (around the nipple) incision. It is important to discuss with Dr. Schwartz whether or not you are planning to get pregnant after breast augmentation.

The decision for a woman to undergo breast augmentation is a personal matter. The results of breast augmentation are generally long-lasting. However, it is important to know that breast implants are not permanent. You should expect to have future visits with Dr. Schwartz to discuss changes in your breasts. Over time, breasts will change due to aging, fluctuation in weight, hormonal factors and gravity. The breast lift cosmetic plastic surgery procedure may be explored to restore breasts to a more youthful contour.
